About The American Legion

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization built on the principles of mutual support and service. Today, it remains the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. The American Legion is dedicated to supporting veterans, mentoring young people, strengthening communities, promoting patriotism and honor, advocating for national security, and continuing its commitment to service members, veterans, and their families.
Across the country, hundreds of American Legion programs and activities make a positive impact in local communities. One of its most recognized initiatives, American Legion Baseball, is among the nation’s leading amateur athletic programs, helping young athletes develop valuable lessons in sportsmanship, citizenship, teamwork, and physical fitness. The Heroes to Hometowns program connects local Legion members with wounded and recovering service members and their families, offering assistance and community support during their transition home. Through fundraising and donations at the local, state, and national levels, the Legion also provides financial assistance to veterans and their families while supporting educational opportunities and college scholarships.
The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with a strong voice in matters affecting veterans and their families. Its influence comes from grassroots involvement, with Legionnaires participating in the legislative process at every level, from local communities to Capitol Hill. Guided by a commitment to their communities, states, and nation, members advocate for the needs and concerns of America’s veterans. The organization’s positions are shaped by resolutions adopted by its volunteer leadership and reflect the priorities of the veterans community.
The strength of The American Legion comes from its members. Through active participation, volunteer service, and involvement in their communities, Legionnaires help carry out the organization’s mission. The American Legion belongs to the people it serves and to the communities where its members live, work, and make a difference.
